Beatrice Alexander Behrman
Beatrice Alexander Behrman, at the age of twenty-eight, decided to begin the Alexander Doll Company in 1923. The Alexander Dolls of the early years were very different from the present Alexander dolls with the nurses and baby dolls made of cloth. A new style of Alexander dolls with cloth facial features became popular with the doll buyers.
These dolls were a mainstay in the Alexander Doll Company into the 1940’s. Beatrice admired the work of an Italian artist, Elena Scavini and Madame of Lenci dolls, and she may of possibly used this idea to become the Madame of the Alexander Doll Company. The Madame used volumes of children’s literature to create her Alexander Dolls as characters from various stories. The Alexander Doll Company also let Hollywood help with Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
Madame Alexander became a spell bound enthusiast of England’s Royalty and produced an Alexander Doll line of Princesses and Queens. The American public was able to purchase beautiful Alexander Dolls of fine quality for their children and as collectors. Madame Alexander passed away in 1990, however, her legacy, visions and accomplishments are still alive in today’s Alexander Doll Company. Though the Alexander Doll Company still produces the storylines of the past Alexander Dolls, the Alexander Doll Company has incorporated the contemporary and modern characters of the present. The Alexander Doll Company continues to honor Madame Alexander with the fine quality and craftsmanship in each and every Alexander Doll.
Today Madame Alexander offers many high quality lines of dolls to choose from including her classic 8" collectibles, 12" Huggums dolls, 14"-18" Pussycat Dolls, and many others. Within each line of Madame Alexander dolls a delicate mixture of past and present influences can be seen.
